Design is all around us—our cities, homes, and even our healthcare systems are products of design choices. As the U.S. simultaneously faces a global pandemic and a crucial movement for racial equity, designers must consider: if design is problem-solving, then what is the responsibility of design in facilitating lasting change?
Join Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum for a dynamic panel discussion among National Design Award winners and jurors. This online conversation will examine the role of design in creating healthier and more equitable cities and consider how designers must respond to the effects of COVID-19 and systemic racism.

Moderated by Bon Ku, MD, Director of the Health Design Lab at Thomas Jefferson University and co-author of Health Design Thinking (Cooper Hewitt | MIT Press, 2020), panelists will include:
  • Maurice Cox, Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development, City of Chicago (2015 NDA Juror)
  • Jeffrey Mansfield, Design Director, MASS Design Group (2017 Architecture Design Award)
  • Mónica Ponce de León, founding principal of MPdL Studio and dean and professor at Princeton University School of Architecture (2007 Architecture Design Award)
  • Craig Wilkins, architect, academic, and author (2017 Design Mind Award)

This panel discussion will showcase alternative, arts-based models of development and urbanization in rust belt cities. We will demonstrate the value of artists and creatives through social infrastructure and community transformation. We will explore case studies, typologies, strategies, and implementation. This collective work will provide an educational framework for implementing development strategies, promoting land ownership for local/small scale entrepreneurs related to creative disciplines and the arts. Our hope is to inspire more artists and designers to apply these strategies, work with local zoning ordinances to advocate for policy change, and raise awareness of the importance of preserving artist ownership over both intellectual and physical land property

The panelists include:
  • Alicia George, co-founder of The Artist Village and owner of Motor City Java House
  • Jim Walker and Shauta Marsh, co-founders of Big Car Collective
  • Tammy Black, President of Manistique Treehouse Community Center
Moderators include Laura Walker and Michael Styczynski of Other Work   [post_title] => Artist as Developer, Transforming Places Through Social Infrastructure [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => artist-as-developer-transforming-places-through-social-infrastructure [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2020-09-23 11:26:51 [post_modified_gmt] => 2020-09-23 15:26:51 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://aiadetroit.com/event/artist-as-developer-transforming-places-through-social-infrastructure/ [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => ai1ec_event [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw )
