DESCRIPTION: As electric vehicle (EV) adoption becomes more widespread, architects and designers will need to learn how to address EV charging within their designs. This course examines the historical evolution and current state of EVs, while debunking myths and understanding the challenges of electrification in the Midwest. Gain an understanding of EV trends/terminology, what the benefits and drawbacks are for each type of charging, and prepare to anticipate future developments in this rapidly evolving field.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.   Participants will gain an understanding of the historical development of electric vehicles and identify key milestones that have shaped the industry. Participants will be able to explain the myths and legitimate challenges surrounding electrification and evaluate why EV adoption remains niche in the Midwest.
2.   Participants will be able to analyze the factors influencing where and why organizations are installing EV charging stations and assess the impact of these installations on urban design and architectural planning.
3.   Participants will be able to identify the different types of EV charging options and evaluate their applicability in various contexts.
4.   Participants will gain an understanding of emerging trends and innovations in EV charging, including advancements in charging technology and integration with energy efficiency ecosystems.

Chris Aina is a recognized expert in electrification, with a passion for anything sustainable. He has nearly a decade of experience in the industry, beginning his career in 2014 at Tesla. He played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy within marketing, training, sales, service, and delivery roles. He led teams that introduced a variety of innovative products to the masses, including spearheading Model 3 Rollout in North America and integrating sustainable energy products in a rapidly scaling company with an ever-evolving mission.

Following 5 years at Tesla, Chris got a deep knowledge of the world of electrifying commercial fleets, by guiding clients like FedEx and Kroger on their journey to zero emissions. Chris is driven by a future where these electric vehicles are powered by sustainable power, generated, and stored locally, enabling a more reliable and resilient grid infrastructure.

He is a realistic critical thinker who lives by the mantra “truth, welcomes scrutiny” he acknowledges the challenges in this critical transition, and wakes up ready to tackle these head on with a nuanced approach centered around innovation. He has lived with the benefits of electrification and sustainable solutions for over 10 years and is committed to ensuring that underrepresented communities have a seat at the table.
