GET TO KNOW THIS YEAR’S SLATE OF CANDIDATES…

VICE PRESIDENT/PRESIDENT ELECT

Andrew Stone AIA, NCARB
Albert Kahn Associates, Inc.

Statement:
As an ongoing member of the AIA Detroit Board of Directors and Executive Committee, my primary goals have remained consistent with my earlier terms: encouraging licensure amongst emerging professionals, increasing participation of members within AIA, and building upon momentum relating to visibility and representation of historically under-represented groups in the AEC industry. Our chapter is uniquely poised to become a benchmark with respect to representation and architectural prowess, as we’re located in an incredibly diverse area of the country and host some of the nation’s top architecture firms.

Throughout my tenure on the AIA Detroit Board, I’ve worked closely with fellow board members, volunteers, and committees to increase visibility of historically under-represented groups, coordinate scholarships to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and/or women architects, and encourage involvement from emerging professionals. These efforts have helped to see an increase in AIA Detroit’s overall membership and have resulted in great feedback in ways in which our chapter can continue to grow, prosper, and better serve our membership.

While efforts to date have been great steps forward, continuous improvement is always the best practice. If elected to the vice presidency, I would seek to continue this work in conjunction with the AIA Detroit Strategic Plan and facilitate a critical analysis of our successes and shortcomings with respect to the strategic plan to develop a framework for continued success. This includes coordination of additional programming that showcases local success stories, development of additional resources to help prospective architects navigate the licensure process, and continually building upon partnerships with allied organizations to increase the pipeline into the profession.

I immensely look forward to the opportunity to continue serving AIA Detroit and its membership through my experience, energy, and passion for the greater-Detroit design community.

Thank you for your consideration!

Andrew Stone, AIA, NCARB, is a Principal, Corporate Director, Senior Architect, and Senior Associate with Albert Kahn Associates. Since joining the company in 2014, he has quickly risen from Intern Architect to skilled Project Architect and the youngest elected Board Member and Corporate Director since the company’s founding in 1895. During his time at Kahn, Andrew has obtained a wide range of experience – everything from a small balcony restoration in Detroit, to a multi-million-dollar corporate headquarters in Erie, Pennsylvania, and a massive electric vehicle manufacturing facility in the Middle East. Andrew’s design creativity permeates every aspect of the projects he leads, helping to provide solutions that are resourceful, unique, and responsive to specific conditions and challenges. His attention to detail, ambition, and willingness to go a step beyond what’s necessary has led him to become a leader – both at Kahn and in the overarching Detroit AEC industry.

Outside of Kahn, in addition to serving on the AIA Detroit Board since the start of 2023, Andrew has volunteered with Gleaner’s Community Food Bank to help feed those in need, the Southeast Michigan chapter of MENSA to introduce children to the architectural design process, and numerous other community groups within Southeast Michigan. In 2022, he was recognized as a Notable LGBTQ in Business leader by Crain’s Detroit – a recognition he hopes will increase visibility of LGBTQ individuals in the AEC industry and help to highlight diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the design community.

Prior to his time at Kahn, Andrew attended Lawrence Technological University where he received both a Bachelor of Science in Architecture (2014) and a Master’s of Architecture with Distinction (2016). While in undergrad, he served as an appointed Commissioner on the Howell Historic District Commission, as well as a Teacher’s Assistant for structures courses, and Marketing Coordinator for the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority.

Zach Funk, AIA
CBRE

Statement:
I am excited to submit my candidacy for a position on the AIA Detroit Board of Directors, confident that my diverse background and comprehensive experience will offer a unique perspective to the board and benefit the architectural community. Having worked on multiple sides of the profession—first as an architect in private practice, then as a government employee, and now as a stakeholder in project ownership—I bring a well-rounded view of the challenges and opportunities facing our profession today.

My journey has provided me with deep insights into the entire lifecycle of architectural projects, from conception through construction to completion. In my current role as a Project Architect with Ford Land, I manage significant projects, while also contributing to master planning efforts on both domestic and international projects. This ownership-side experience has broadened my understanding of the profession’s role in shaping the built environment and has honed my ability to consider the broader economic, environmental, and social impacts of our work.

Additionally, my tenure with the City of Detroit as an Urban Designer, and my role with the City of Plymouth Planning Commission, have allowed me to engage closely with public and private stakeholders in shaping community-driven development. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the entitlement process, zoning regulations, and how design standards influence urban growth and regeneration. As a contributor to key planning documents such as the Traditional Main Street Overlay Areas Standards and Guidelines, I have worked to make the development process more accessible to small business owners and new developers, furthering the goal of sustainable and equitable community development.

As an active participant in AIA Detroit, I’ve enjoyed completing the Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program, moderating roundtable discussions, and contributing to workshops and studio reviews. AIA Detroit has been a critical driver of innovation, collaboration, and advocacy for the profession in our region and I am eager to contribute my knowledge, skills, and passion to ensure that AIA Detroit remains a leader in advancing the profession, supporting its members, and shaping the future of the built environment in the region and beyond.

I will leverage my expertise and experience to advance AIA Detroit’s strategic initiatives and the grow the profession within the region. I will advocate for initiatives to support professional development through education and programming to help members continue to stay competitive in an ever-changing profession due to technological advancements and client demands. I am also committed to continuing to make the organization a strong voice for the profession by promoting the value of design to public officials and the community stakeholders. By working with policy makers and stakeholders I will help advance the role of the profession in our communities.

My involvement with AIA has deepened my commitment to the profession and to the community of architects in Detroit, and I look forward to hopefully serving on the Board to continue fostering the growth of the organization.

Thank you for your consideration and support as I seek to contribute to the success of AIA Detroit.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Patricia Roberts, Int’l Associate AIA, LEED AP BD+C

As the Associate Director of the AIA Detroit board this past year, I had the privilege of serving on the JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity) task force. We are committed to ensuring that our membership reflects the diverse populations we serve, recognizing that inclusivity is essential for our future. Together with my fellow board members, I am focused on enhancing local member recognition and visibility. Additionally, I had the honor of raising funds for the “Fund the Future” task force, securing sponsorships for our annual Celebration of Architecture awards program.

I envision a future where women in Detroit play a leading role in the AEC community, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as your Associate Director for another year.

As a young professional, I am passionate about engaging with local communities and advocating for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. With a passion for integrating diverse elements into a cohesive whole, I am honored to submit my candidacy.

Bio:
If architecture is the art of integrating diverse elements into a cohesive and purposeful whole, then Patricia has cultivated her passion for this profession from an early age, nurturing it with dedication and enthusiasm.

Growing up in South India, Patricia was immersed in the world of architecture, frequently visiting her father’s architecture firm and construction sites. Playing with measuring tapes and listening to discussions about scaffolding, columns, and cantilevers sparked her fascination with how forms evolve into structures and the various techniques and styles that shape design.

Patricia earned her Bachelor of Architecture and Interior Design from MEASI Academy of Architecture in Chennai, India. In 2013, she moved to the United States to pursue a Master of Architecture at the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia, drawn by their holistic and interdisciplinary approach to design. Her professional journey includes eight years at Cooper Carry, an architecture firm in Atlanta, where she also served on the Board of Directors for AIA Georgia from 2016 to 2020. This board experience inspired her to engage with local communities beyond the office, participating in initiatives like Equity in Architecture to advocate for gender equality within the A/E/C industry. Additionally, she was the Marketing Director for NOMA from 2017 to 2019. Currently, Patricia works as a Technical Designer at Gensler in Detroit and serves as the Associate Director for AIA Detroit.
