Building off the May EPC Forum, this event aims to further explore how emerging professionals define their place in today’s profession with particular regard to their coworkers.  Moderated by the passionate and talented Najahyia Chinchilla (Gensler), a panel of distinguished industry patrons will discuss the importance of mentoring across generations and how vital such relationships are to the workplace and future of our profession.

Come meet up with the Emerging Professionals Committee for an open discussion on the topic of licensure within the profession of architecture. The AIA Detroit Technology in Architectural Practice Committee wants to create opportunities for open dialogue to identify and educate how technology has changed the building process. Through presentations during our meetings, we create environments for this dialogue to occur for those wanting to be a part of the conversation. In order for our industry to grow in technology proficiencies, we believe we must network ideas – and more importantly’ the people behind those ideas – to share in the impact technology has upon our profession. The TAP Committee is looking for individuals wanting to be the voice to start the dialogue to create opportunities for others to learn and be exposed to the possibilities technology provides. AIA Detroit has proudly partnered with the talented folks at Illuminart for the past two years, so we were super excited to see Brienne Willcock and Robert White featured on concentratemedia.com. Illuminart is the designing force behind the lighting at Shed 3 for our 2013 & 2014 Celebration of Architecture; the cobalt blue and fuschia lighting schemes that you could see from down the street in Eastern Market are all because these guys know how to light a building. They also helped to pull in Fantasee Lighting, who brings the equipment and skilled labor needed to bring to life Brienne’s concept for the building. We are eternally grateful for these folks, they certainly deserve the media attention. (more…)

From AIA National, January 26, 2015: “The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has selected 14 recipients for the 2015 AIA Young Architects Award. Young Architects are defined as professionals who have been licensed 10 years or fewer regardless of their age. This award, now in its 22nd year, honors individuals who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession early in their careers.” (more…)

This year, the Women In Architect Fund (WIA Fund) launched their Emerging Professional (EP) Inspiration Award. Working to inspire emerging professionals, one woman at a time, the WIA Fund awarded one national and one international professional with a cash grant to help further their career. Entries were shortlisted and winners were selected by both a committee and the public via the WIA Fund Facebook page.

Our very own Samantha Szeszulski was the national recipient of the WIA EP Inspiration award this year! The WIA Fund was looking for ” young ladies who demonstrate great capacity for leadership, an unwavering passion for the profession of architecture, and a willingness to contribute to society which is awe-inspiring”, and Samantha fit the description. She is the current chair of our Emerging Professionals Committee and is completing her Masters in Architecture at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Lawrence Technological University College of Architecture and Design and Design Corps are proud to announce a partnership to present the Structures for Inclusion Conference 15 in Detroit.

Background:
In October of 2000, Design Corps, a community based non-profit organization, sponsored a conference at Princeton University. The purpose of this conference is to bring together and share the best ideas and practices that are reaching those currently un-served and underserved by architecture. These efforts are often grounded on two common beliefs that communities and individuals should be included in the design decisions that affect them and architects and communities should work together to identify their shared values and goals in the collaborative process of defining quality design. Since the first SFI at Princeton University, it has been hosted at various institutions including the University of Virginia, the University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, and the Parsons New School for Design among others. The conference has become internationally recognized as a thought-provoking forum to learn about grass roots efforts and alternative practices making architecture more accessible. (more…)

A. The Chapter shall publish a notice to the entire membership at least 20 days prior to the Annual Meeting. The notice shall restate the date, time and location for the meeting, list the nominations, shall provide background on the nominees, and shall give instructions for absentee ballot voting if there are contested positions. Moving On:

This is my final letter to you as President. It was an honor to serve you, and it has been an exciting and fruitful two years. We have continued to evolve the organization and I know, in the future, AIA Detroit will continue to become more relevant, offering you the opportunity to participate in a more vital design community.  I am particularly proud of our committees, whose efforts are responsible for all the programming that comes out of AIA Detroit.  Without those volunteers, we would never be able to put on so many events every year, including everything from our growing Architecture Celebration; to our EPC, BEC, and BCRC educational programs; to the civic engagement efforts of our COTE and UPC;  to the fun opportunities offered by PKN and our Tours committee; to the limitless possibilities of our new TAP and Professional Affiliate groups.  All these passionate volunteers and their committees help us connect to the greater community, helping us become a more relevant organization as AIA Detroit continues to move forward with efforts of establishing a visible Design Center in the city.

Thank you to all of the Board members that have served with me during my presidency and during the years prior to that. Thank you to our past Business Managers, Milda Bublys and Sam Moschelli, and our current Business Manager Lauren Myrand for serving us so well.   Thank you to all of the committee chairs and members that do the hard work of putting on wonderful events that serve our membership and connect us to the larger community. Thank you to the many past Presidents that have brought AIA Detroit to this point through the years.  Thank you to the AIA Michigan leadership for working with AIA Detroit as we transitioned and became a more independent and Detroit-focused organization.  Thank you to the AIA Michigan staff, Cathy, Evelyn, Christine and Rae for their support.

Our organization would not be as vital and successful without the contributions of our sponsors in allied professions. Thank you all for trusting in us and supporting our efforts to improve the profession.

There are too many names to mention in this short article, but know that each of you hold an important part in my memories, and I deeply appreciate your dedication to our profession.
