A global collection of primetime programs rethinks how TV approaches the design world

2016 marks the beginning of a design empire for Mike and Una Chapman, life and business partners of the global collection of primetime television series on architecture, ByDesign TV. Since airing the first pilot episode in Tasmania six years ago, the collection has quickly expanded beyond Australia and architecture—now covering hotels, interiors, landscapes, and industrial design in increasingly more markets, including America and Europe. With its second season of “America ByDesign: Architecture” slated to premiere mid-August (in partnership with the American Institute of Architects) on CBS, a series on innovation in Europe underway alongside the second season of “Hotels ByDesign” and fifth season of “Australia ByDesign: Architecture,” this production company has clearly been very busy. The key to early success and the goal of the growing collection, Mike Chapman tells us, is filling the gaps in TV’s portrayal of architecture.

AIA Detroit is pleased to announce the recipients of its inaugural 2023 AIA Detroit Scholarships, Allyza-Danica Valino of Lawrence Technological University and Angel Mangham of the University of Detroit Mercy! 

For the very first time, AIA Detroit awarded two annual scholarships, (1) $1,500 and (1) $3,000, with the intention to support and foster a diverse profession that is representative of our greater chapter community. This year’s efforts were made more special by the generous contribution of an AIA National Component Matching Scholarship Grant, which awarded $1,000 to students enrolled in a NAAB accredited program.

The AIA Detroit Scholarships were established to recognize deserving architecture students attending a NAAB-accredited institution within our chapter boundary (University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence Technological University) or whose permanent residence is in the AIA Detroit chapter boundary (Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, and Wayne counties) and is enrolled in a NAAB-accredited institution elsewhere. The goal is to support future BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and/or women architects as we aim to have our profession better reflects our diverse chapter community.

Congratulations, Allyza-Danica Valino and Angel Mangham! You are assets to the community and we can’t wait to see you flourish within the profession.

“Our alumni and [Challenge] Fellows are making an impact across various sectors and communities. One sector where they are driving change is architecture. According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), over 70% of registered architects identify as male, making architecture a male-dominated field. At Challenge Detroit, over the last 11 years, most of our applicants with an architecture background have identified as women, and of 24 total architecture [Challenge] Fellows, 20 have been women—that’s over 83%! We are so grateful to be in partnership with our host company employers—especially Quinn Evans, Mosher Dolan, and SmithGroup who have hosted multiple architecture [Challenge] Fellows—in playing a part to support women with architecture opportunities to grow in their careers. While some alumna have taken multi-disciplinary career steps utilizing their architecture skill sets, many have continued their careers in prominent and exciting architecture roles.”

Jenny Kawecki | NCARB

After careful review and consideration, NCARB’s Board of Directors unanimously decided at their January meeting to retire the rolling clock policy, which placed a five-year expiration date on passed divisions of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE®). On April 30, 2023, the policy will be replaced with a new score validity policy, which bases the validity of passed ARE divisions on exam versions (such as ARE 4.0 or ARE 5.0) rather than a set time frame. NCARB will reinstate previously expired divisions of ARE 4.0 for candidates who are seeking licensure in jurisdictions that do not have a rolling clock-type requirement.
