Description:
Historical review of building construction materials means and methods: drywall, plaster, masonry, pyrobar, clay tiles and miscellaneous materials. Join us as we meander existing building materials means and methods, barrier repairs, while addressing the physical environment of yesterday and meeting 3rd party testing standards and code compliance of today.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand fire protection industry from a historical perspective of fire events, industry terminology of “Definitions through Evolution” and need for more robust testing.
2. Understand physical environment and identifying construction materials means and methods of yesterday and possible repairs to existing fire-resistance-rated barriers.
3. Understand how the barrier repair reinstates the integrity and continuity of the fire-resistance-rated barrier in accordance with 3rd party testing laboratories and code requirements of today… Archaic materials.
4. Understand importance of application-based specifications, standards of existing building construction and sourcing UL Systems or technical evaluations in accordance with 3rd party testing laboratories.

Michael Crall is a Field Engineer – Central North America for Specified Technologies Inc. STI is a global firestop manufacturer located in New Jersey with engineering offices in NJ and OK. Michael’s experience includes 30 years in IBC / NFPA Compliance Standards, Barrier Management Strategies, healthcare facility audits and has been providing AIA / BICSI and various state approved presentations for over 25 years.

Michael currently sits on various building code, regulatory committees and building code roundtables facilitating technical presentations to architect, building code official, fire marshal and construction trades for continuing education. Michael has partnered with healthcare facility owners to assess and design proactive barrier management compliance programs. When provided an opportunity to present CEU programs, the content is historical and code based, along with industry examples found during building construction or healthcare facility surveys.

Married 33 years with 23-year-old triplet boys who have each earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Eagle Palms. Garrett graduated from Lake Superior State with a BS in Fire Science and has passed his Fire Fighter I / II and Hazmat certification and is working toward EMT and Paramedic certification, while working for the Canonsburg, MI Fire Department. Grant graduated from Ferris University with an AS in Automotive Service Technology; Grant is also serving in the Army National Guard and recently returned home from deployment. Nick is also attending Ferris University and is pursuing a BS in Bio-Medical Technology. Nick has been responsible for running two research labs at Ferris performing Diabetes, COVID and Alzheimer medication studies and will be pursuing his PhD at Auburn in 2023. Michael and his boys recently completed restoring a 1968 Corvette Roadster, which included rewiring of the entire car, replacement of fiber optics, vacuum lines, steering / suspension components, engine, and transmission.
