Presentation Purpose and Objective: The purpose of this presentation is to improve the code awareness of designers, design professionals, contractors, code enforcement personnel, and other interested professions with regard to certain commercial code requirements in Michigan that help achieve proper performance of the building envelope. An attendee of the presentation should leave the seminar having learned the following content objectives:
  • Identify specific MBC performance-based code provisions that apply to exterior envelopes, from below-grade to roof.
  • Explore the technical requirements of these provisions.
  • Discuss the design and installation standards for these provisions.
  • Understand the potential problems of non-compliance by reviewing failure case studies.
Meet Your Presenters: Brian J. Tognetti, RA, CCCA, NCARB (Principal & Unit Manager): Mr. Tognetti of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) has 30 years of architectural experience, nearly 25 as a registered architect in various states including Michigan. He is also a member of the Southeast Michigan Building Officials and Inspectors Association (SEMBOIA), the International Code Council (ICC), the Metropolitan Detroit Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), and the AIA Detroit Building Codes and Regulations Committee (BC&RC). At WJE, one of his areas of expertise involves assessing the application of construction regulations and other aspects of the profession of architecture, as well as, investigating and correcting failures associated with the exterior envelopes of buildings, ranging from deficient design, improper installation, defective manufacturing, or other causes. Mike Shuell, AIA: Mr. Shuell has served the Metro Detroit architecture community in various capacities for nearly 20 years, including 9 years with the AIAD BC&RC committee. His projects have ranged from strip mall tenant fit-outs to very large industrial facilities. Michael has recently joined Gresham Smith as a Senior Project Architect with a special focus on industrial battery manufacturing facilities.     Justin James Bialek, AIA, NCARB, AIAD BC&RC Chair: Justin has been working as a Project Architect with Jeffery A. Scott Architects P.C. of Farmington, Michigan for the past 9 years, and has over 37 years of architectural experience. As a registered architect in the State of Michigan for over 12 years, Justin works primarily on small commercial and multi-family residential projects. Justin’s interest in building codes and the regulations that govern the building industry led him to join the AIAD BC&RC 13 years ago, to help guide and organize that great group of architects, municipal building officials, and other industry leaders, to foster the interactions between the architects and building officials.   RSVP Here.
