Born and raised in Detroit, Melinda obtained a degree in architecture from the University of Michigan. Upon graduation from the university, her travels led her to live and work abroad in Berlin and Palermo in architecture and set design thus developing a global perspective on art and design. Once returning to the city, a serendipitous opportunity to volunteer as a producer for an event sparked her curiosity and led to a career change to focus on event production and design. While working a full-time job, she began working for the Movement Electronic Music Festival as an experience designer for the VIP and in selected areas throughout the festival. Specializing in creating atmospheric designs and installations, thousands of guests have been able to delight and experience a unique setting year after year.
In 2011, Melinda was tasked with creating the first design festival in Detroit that led to Design Core Detroit being awarded as stewards of the UNESCO City of Design designation. Throughout her work with Design Core Detroit, I began to develop methods to use art and design to thoughtfully and respectfully engage with communities of color within Detroit. In 2019, she established Studio M Detroit to continue working with neighborhoods and designers to uplift and share their work with a global audience. To date, Melinda has engaged with 3,000+ designers and 12 neighborhoods throughout the city of Detroit.
