The Music School is a new 34,000 sq. ft. building addition, which brings needed expansion to the current program by creating additional classrooms, new rehearsal and performance venues, a dedicated percussion suite, and several other specialty spaces. The Music School addition also becomes the new front door for the establishment with a large 2,400 square foot lobby located adjacent to the school’s four primary rehearsal and performance spaces.
Most building additions require some level of sensitivity to the existing architecture. The scrutiny given to the design of the Music School was unusually high considering the structure, completed in 1964, was designed by renowned Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen. The existing building is a linear collection of masses set in a wooded landscape with simple yet beautiful concrete and brick masonry detailing. How the addition connects to the building, its placement on the site, and exterior material detailing were all painstakingly evaluated throughout the design process.
