The Early Childhood Learning Laboratory provides a service to the community and laboratory spaces that support hands-on educational opportunities for college students. The location of the building centralizes the program to its users, creating a destination between the historic neighborhood directly to the east and the college campus to the west.
The College’s Education programs believe that adults, like children, learn best from their experiences, in a community of learners. Establishing community within the new facility was a critical success factor throughout the design process. The two stone classroom Houses are organized to create a community courtyard with dynamic visual and physical connections from all around.
The project is targeting LEED certification but goes further to include biophilic design attributes which improve the well-being of its inhabitants. Natural materials, access to natural light, views, and the ability to open the building to the exterior from every classroom were guiding design principles.
